Guide to brotherhood!

What is Brotherhood?

Brotherhood is the next step in membership within the Order of the Arrow (OA), Scouting’s National Honor Society. It signifies your continued commitment to the ideals of the OA and to cheerful service. Where the Ordeal marks your initial induction, Brotherhood is a time to reflect, recommit, and renew your dedication to the principles of Brotherhood, Cheerfulness, and Service.

Purpose of Brotherhood

The Brotherhood experience is designed to:

  • Strengthen your understanding of the Obligation, Legend, and Symbols of the OA.
  • Encourage continued service to your unit, lodge, and Scouting community.
  • Help you deepen your connection with other Arrowmen and the purpose of the Order.
  • Recognize your growth in leadership and understanding since your Ordeal.

When You Can Seal Your Membership

You may become a Brotherhood member at least six months after completing your Ordeal.
During that time, you should:

  • Remain active in your troop, crew, or ship.
  • Participate in lodge or chapter activities.
  • Continue to practice the OA Obligation in your daily life.

Preparing for Brotherhood

Before sealing your membership, reflect on your journey and prepare to show that you understand the OA’s purpose. You should be able to:

  1. Memorize the Obligation, Song, Admonition, Sign, Handshake, and Motto.
  2. Understand the meaning of the Arrow, the Legend of the Order, and the purpose of the OA.
  3. Explain how you are living out the OA principles of Brotherhood, Cheerfulness, and Service in your Scouting unit.
  4. Plan how you will give future service to your lodge, chapter, and unit.

The Brotherhood Experience

The Brotherhood ceremony is a meaningful and reflective experience.
It often takes place at a lodge event, fellowship, or campout and includes:

  • A Brotherhood Trail or Workshop, where you review OA traditions and principles.
  • A personal reflection, where you consider your service and growth.
  • The Brotherhood Ceremony, where you seal your membership and are recognized as a full Brother in the Order of the Arrow.

Why Brotherhood Matters

Becoming a Brotherhood member is not just an honor—it’s a commitment to live the OA ideals daily.
It means:

  • You are a fully participating member of your lodge.
  • You set an example of servant leadership for others.
  • You help strengthen the lodge through service, support, and involvement.

Continuing the Journey

After Brotherhood, there are still ways to grow:

  • Vigil Honor — for those who have given exceptional service.
  • Leadership Opportunities — serve as a chapter or lodge officer, event staff, or ceremonial team member.
  • National Programs — attend events like the National Order of the Arrow Conference (NOAC), OA High Adventure, or NLS (National Leadership Seminar).

Brotherhood is not an end, but a renewal.

It’s your chance to recommit yourself to the spirit of the Arrow —
to serve others with cheerfulness,
to lead with humility,
and to live the principles of Scouting and the OA every day.
